Flickinger Learning Center’s mission is to provide educational opportunities for learners of all ages, races, beliefs and abilities for stronger individuals and a healthier community.
The Flickinger Learning Center opened it’s doors in the fall of 2003 as a safe place for after school activities and academic assistance to those looking to complete the GED program at Muscatine Community College.
In 2005, another classroom was added. In subsequent years, future remodeling has given way to a multipurpose room, a small kitchen, a state of the art computer lab, and a complete renovation of the lower level.
Hands-on labor through the participation of Leadership Muscatine enabled improvements in heating, air conditioning, new lighting, and a city code approved sprinkler system to enable use of the lower level.
Dedicated funding from The United Way of Muscatine, Roy J Carver Trust, Muscatine Connected, Community Foundation of Greater Muscatine, HNI Corporation and Muscatine Charities enabled the hiring of a professional staff to guide the expansion of the program.
In 2013 we added a second location to accommodate more students. While this center has been discontinued, it gave us the experience needed to successfully expand In 2014, we partnered with our school district to provide on-site after school programming at two additional sites. Support from Muscatine Power and Water and Microsoft Corporation contributed to the computer network upgrade completed over the summer of 2014.
We have now expanded to include 3 satellite sites in addition to our Main Site. Two are located at elementary buildings in the Muscatine Community School District. The third is located at Sunset Park Apartments. It is run in partnership with the City of Muscatine.
